Department of Justice Secretary Villano Aguirre II said in an interview on Tuesday that the DOJ will conduct an investigation why did the illegal drugs proliferate inside the New Bilibid Prison during the previous Aquino administration.
“Our objective really is to find out what happened in the previous administration and why did illegal drugs proliferate in Bilibid. Everybody in the DOJ (Department of Justice) from the past administration—at all levels—will be included in the investigation,” said chief justice Aguirre.
However, Aguirre clarified that the investigation will not only focus to specific persons and will be different to the investigations conducted by the NBI and PNP.
“Whoever will come up in the investigation, we will pursue them if their names come up,” he said.
The DOJ chief is set to create a fact-finding team to conduct investigation where during the past administration, there were three Justice Secretaries: Leila De Lima, now a senator, Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa, now a Supreme Court Associate Justice and Emmanuel Caparas.
De Lima who initiated the raids inside the Bilibid which led to the discovery of high-profile inmates receiving VIP treatment. The raids were continued during the time of Caparas and Caguioa.
Earlier, Aguirre also revealed the two former DOJ officials and other BuCor officials involved, receiving millions from high-profile inmates in exchange of special treatment.
