‘HE WAS VERY, VERY NICE TO ME’ VP Leni expected a snub from Duterte in first meet
Vice President Leni Robredo admitted Saturday that she was expecting a snub from President Rodrigo Duterte during their first meeting, but was surprised by the " very nice" treatment from the tough-talking leader.
"I was expecting for the worst na hindi niya ako papansinin. At alam mo iyon, parang ni-reready ko rin iyong sarili ko. Kaya noong pag-akyat niya pa lang sa stage na pagpalit ko sa kanya, agad naman na pinansin niya ako," Robredo told reporters during the thanksgiving lunch in Naga City.
She said it was Duterte who spoke first during their encounter in Camp Aguinaldo, where they attended the change of command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines leadership.
"Actually iyong first niya atang sinabi sa akin, 'At last nag-meet na tayo.' Kaya sabi ko naman sa kanya, 'Oo nga po, Mr. President.' He was nice the entire time," Robredo said, recalling her conversation with Duterte.
She said that during the event, where the two top officials were sitting next to each other, Duterte joked a bit and even offered her his coconut water.
"Oo nagbibiro siya. Binibigay niya sa akin iyong iniinom niyang coco water," Robredo shared.
During her speech at the thanksgiving lunch, Robredo said that the meeting was "exciting."
She said that after the meeting, she was expecting a "good partnership" with Duterte.
"For the record, he was very very nice to me. I am very hopeful that despite the seemingly rough start. We will have a good partership all for the love of the country," she told her supporters.
Scolded by daughters
Robredo said that her daughters scolded her for laughing too often during the meeting.
"Pinapagalitan nga ako ng mga anak ko kasi parang tawa daw ako nang tawa. Sabi ko, siguro na-manifest lang iyong saya ko," she explained.
She said that she was elated because her fears of her first meeting with Duterte did not happen.
"Na-manifest lang siguro iyong saya ko na ang fears ko nang first meeting namin ay hindi naman nangyari at parang na-exceed niya iyong expectations na napakabait naman niya sa akin kahapon," she said.
The vice president, like netizens who approved of their congeniality, hopes that their cordial meeting will extend throughout the rest of their terms.
"Palagay ko para sa bansa naman, kailangan na iyong parang healthy lang ang magiging working relationship namin kasi after all, kami naman ang nanay at tatay ng bansa. Kaya after yesterday mas naging hopeful naman ako na bumuti," Robredo said.
Second meeting, Cabinet post
Robredo maintained her opinion that Duterte will not offer her a Cabinet position.
"Handa na rin naman ako na wala. In fact, marami nang pagpupulong tungkol sa partnerships with the private sector. Kaya iyong sa akin, bonus na lang yun. Kung wala, ready na din tayo," Robredo said.
She said that during the meeting, Duterte promised her that she could make a courtesy call "anytime."
Robredo said she is expecting a second meeting with Duterte this coming week.
"I am hoping na ngayong coming week ay baka maka-set na ng appointment," she said
